Musical chairs!

The musical chairs at the top of the Cellink Plus Premier League leaderboard continues and with just three weekends of the Premiership remaining, it’s still a toss up on who will be the winner.

Alpha United held the top spot for all of 48 hours until Pele snatched it from their grasp on Sunday evening with an inspired 1-0 victory over Western Tigers when play continued at the Georgetown Football Club ground on Sunday.

It was a tale of two halves as the first stanza saw Western Tigers dominating the early exchanges although both teams failed to capitalize on the opportunities created.

The first half ended in a 0-0 stalemate. But on the resumption Pele took the field a different team, one which was in contention for the overall title. The winning goal was to come off the boot of Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant who in the 49th minute slipped unmarked into the Tigers’ area and upon receiving a through ball slotted home the decider past a slow reacting Rolex Scott.

Tigers then launched several raids on the Pele goal but some stout defending ensured that the score line would remain1-0 in favour of Pele.

With the win, their fifth to go along with seven draws, Pele now have 22 points, the same as Alpha but are a nose in front on goal difference. With the loss and a total of 16 points, Tigers remain in fourth behind Conquerors, who on 21 points are nipping at the heels of Alpha and Pele. Conquerors’ 21 points were realized with a 6-1 embarrassment of Police in the supporting game on the night.

Jewel Lloyd recorded the first helmet trick with a quadruple strike that ensured his team’s winning margin. Ironically it was Police that opened the scoring in the 22nd minute through Ken Grant, but that would be the high point of the night for them.

It was all downhill after that as Jomo Hinds in the 34th minute quickly equalized before Neville Stanton sent Conquerors ahead for good, all in the first half.

The second half was the Jewel Lloyd show as he scored his first in the 71st minute and hit the back of the net regularly for four goals until mercifully the referee blew the final whistle with Police on the receiving end of an old fashioned beating.

Play in the Premiership will continue this Friday at the same venue with all the contenders looking to begin making moves up the leaderboard before Pele, Alpha and Conquerors run away with the top spots.
