Secondary Schools B/ball Association launches inaugural tournament

The largest ever school’s basketball project will get underway tomorrow with the inaugural Guyana Secondary Schools Basketball Association (GSSBA) league. The tournament will be launched at the Burnham Court at Middle and Carmichael Streets and will wrap up in February 2008. Over 30 public and private schools totalling some 800 student athletes will take part in the tournament which the executive of the GSSBA says has the potential to impact over 40,000 school aged fans. The GSSBA says it intends not only to advance amateur sport and the development of ‘whole’ youths in Guyana but will provide tutoring services for academically challenged athletes in addition to providing entrepreneurship training to interested senior level athletes who wish to start their own businesses upon completing secondary school. The first day will see Christ Church Secondary and St. John’s College doing battle; Bishops High tackling Tutorial High and St. Mary’s High facing Brickdam Secondary. Play starts at 13:00 h each day and all first round games are slated for the Burnham Court.
