`Pacer’ Adonis to manage U-17 team to T/dad

Former national fast bowler Robert `Pacer’ Adonis has been named manager of a 14-member Under-17 squad which will represent Guyana in the quadrangular under-17 cricket competition which begins in Trinidad and Tobago this week-end.

The team will be led by Georgetown Cricket Club’s (GCC) Jeetendra Sookdeo and includes three players who represented Guyana in this year’s TCL Under-19 competition in St. Kitts.

They are left-arm spinner Totaram Bishun, all-rounder Jonathan Foo and medium fast bowler Seon Hetemyer.

Notable absentee is Harrinarine Chattergoon who fell ill on Saturday and has been replaced by Trevon Griffith.

Anthony Bramble is the wicket-keeper and, taking into consideration his recent form with the bat for his club Scotsburg United, the national junior selectors can be at ease with this selection.

The batting which will be expected to post manageable totals for the bowlers to defend, is in the capable hands of Sookdeo, Ryan Rajmangal, Essequibo Under-17 captain Royston Alkins, his team-mate Rovindra Parsram (who scored heavily during the recent under-17 Inter county tournament), Trevon Griffith, Manoj Pooranauth, Bramble and Albion all-rounder Foo.

The bowling department will be taken care of by Ghandi Youth Organization’s left-arm fast bowler Andre Stoll who has come on leaps and bounds of late, Keyron Fraser, Hetemyer who can also hold his own with the bat, Alkins, Foo, left-arm spinner Javed Rasheed who was a thorn in the side of the opposition he bowled against in the Under-17 Inter county tournament and Sookdeo.

According to Adonis, the team, whose members will be presented with uniforms today at the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) office by sponsors Clico (Guyana) Limited, has gelled tremendously over the past three week-ends that they were together.

Although their preparation was hampered by the inclement weather recently, Adonis said he still expected much from the bunch who, according to chairman of selectors, Lennox Hunte, mentioned that they would be put into some training programme for possible selection to Guyana’s TCL team next year.

The players are reminded that they have to be at the Glow Hotel International for 11:00h today.

The squad reads: Jeetendra Sookdeo (captain), Ryan Rajmangal, Royston Alkins, Rovindra Parsram, Trevon Griffith, Manoj Pooranauth, Anthony Bramble, Javed Rasheed, Sahadeo Somai, Totaram Bishun, Seon Hetemyer, Jonathan Foo, Keyron Fraser and Andre Stoll.
