North G/town crowned overall champs

North Georgetown claimed the 2007 National School’s Champion of Champions trophy last night when the curtain closed on the 47th annual Cycling, Swimming and Athletic championships at the National Stadium at Providence to conclude very eventful championships.

The final tabulation of points from wins in the different categories of the championship revealed that North Georgetown (District 11) had gained a total of 64 points which was just enough to gain this year’s overall title, while Corentyne (District Six) claimed a close second place finish with 63.5 points while Linden ended in third place.

Though North George-town’s Cinderella ending may come as a surprise to many, it was conceptualized in the minds of their athletes and teachers all along as from the beginning they emerged with their new uniforms bearing the slogan “Taking it back in 2007”.

Team Manager Kwabena Wright told Stabroek Sport that it took hard work from him and his team to accomplish their goal.

“We tried our best to compile the best possible team of athletes, even pleading and reaching parents who would not usually send athletes so that we could have had athletes placed in every event.”

They won the swimming Championship with 306 points and placed third in the Cycling and Track and Field championships.

Fourth place in the overall championship was awarded to Bartica (District 7) with 59 points, fifth to West Demerara with 47.5 points, East Georgetown in sixth place with 47 points, followed by District 14 (East Bank Demerara) with 38 points. New Amsterdam placed eighth with 35.5 points and West Coast Berbice ninth with35 points.

Linden secured the Track and Field Championships as they amassed 643 points, beating second-placed Cor-entyne by 208 points. North Georgetown came back strong on the final day to claim third with 433 which may have been the reason for their overall victory.

Rhodell Alleyne emerged as this year girls’ U- 20 Champion amassing a total of 40 points, which was more than any other competitor.

She won the female U-20 long jump, 100m, 200m and 400m.

The boys’ U- 20 champion was Kellon Jones of District 10 who finished with 20 points. They were also two other females who dominated their categories with impressive performances, namely Leticia Myles and Janella Jonas.

Myles, of District 13 won the U-14 champion’s trophy with a total of thirty eight points gained from her participation in the jumps and sprints while Jonas won the 400m, 800m, 1500m, and placed second in the 3000m to complete a memorable championships.

The U-16 champion boy was no other than Ricardo Martin who won the 800 and 1500m and finished with a total of 36 points.

There was a dramatic tie in the boys’ U-14 category as Shawn Cacsar (District 7) and Parish Cadogan (District 10) were tied with 30 points each at the end of the competition.

Ozioma Scott and Koby Hurst of District 11 were the U-8 champion girl and boy ending with 22 points and 31 points respectively.

Keyon Davis and Tevin Garraway will also share the boys’ U-12 title while Treshanna Thompson (District 14) was the girls’ U-12 champion.

Rondell Dey and Shonnette Rodrigues were the U-10 boys and girls’ champions respectively.
