Roberts, Taffin Khan in play-off to determine junior chess champ

Ronald Roberts and Taffim Khan tied for first place when the national junior Chess championship ended on Saturday at the Ocean Spray Hotel.

The two players ended the 14-round tournament with 12 points each after Roberts needing just a draw in his final round game with Khan lost outright.

The two players subsequently participated in a three-match

play-off series with Khan, using the white pieces winning the first game only for Roberts to capture the second game.

In the third game the two players battled to a draw with Roberts seemingly missing a line which could have led to victory.

Finishing in third position was Saeed Ali with eight points while Sham Khan on seven points placed fourth.

Cecil Cox with six points, Kana Khan on four and a half, Shreriffa Ali with three and a half and Scion Taitt with three points occupied the remaining positions.

In the senior category Kriskal Persaud finally emerged as the sole leader with 13 points but must thank Shiv Nandalall for his position.

Nandalall upset Errol Tiwari on Sunday after Tiwari had taken the lead by defeating Persaud in the previous round.

Tiwari had defeated a stubborn Ronuel Greenidge in his first game on Saturday but lost on Saturday evening to Learie Webster while on table one, the experienced David Khan held Persaud to a draw.
