Daesrat, Wintz and Nagamootoo highlight fourth round

The fourth round of matches in the Berbice Cricket Board Isaac Bissoon three-day first division cricket competition ended recently with the highlight of the round being the innings of Young Warriors Damodar Daesrat and Paul Wintz.

Daesrat and Wintz struck centuries with the latter making 235, (20x4s; 11x6s) the second double century of the competition and Wintz who scored the first one, 121 not out (12x4s; 4x6s) as they added 304 for the third wicket. And Warriors who took first innings points from Police and refused to enforce the follow on with a lead of 211, reached 432-4 at the end of the game. To date, Wintz has scored 543 runs in the competition at an average of 135.75.

Earlier Police were bowled out for 171 in reply to Warriors’ mammoth first innings score of 382 despite a defiant 81 from Jason Leitch and 36 from Zaheer Moakan. Former Berbice fast bowler Kwesi Maltay took 3-59 while leg spinner Charran Singh (3-38) and medium pacer Amir Budhoo (2-40) routed the lawmen. Scores: Young Warriors 382 and 432-4, Police: 171

Meanwhile, Rose Hall Community Centre defeated Blairmont Community Centre by four wickets in an exciting game that could be deemed the match of the round.

Replying to Blairmont’s 147, Rose Hall was bowled out for 142 with Balram Samaroo who resumed on 54 over week making 75. Bowling for Blairmont, Karamdat Bissoondial took 5-42 and Marcus France 4-39.

Blairmont with a five-run first innings lead reached 264-8 batting a second time with Laikram Sukhra 71, Karamdat Bissoondial 43, Krisendat Bissoondial 42 and Ramesh Budhram 41 leading the way with the bat.

Bowling for Rose Hall, former Berbice under-19 fast bowler Vishal Mohabir took 4-18 and Samaroo 3-85. Needing to score 271 for a come-from-behind victory, Rose Hall began the final day at 14:45 h because of rain, needing to score a further 239 runs for victory which they achieved by four wickets through 15 minutes to play with some positive batting.

Sasenarine Sukhdeo (79, 5x4s) Totaram Seenanan (61, 5x4s) and Daryl Narine (52, 5x4s led the batting charge for Rose Hall as off spinner Vejai Heeralall 2-46 and Krisendat Bissoondial 2-105 tried to contain them. Scores: Blairmont 147 and 264-8 declared, Rose Hall Community Centre: 142 and 271-6.

A five-wicket haul from national right arm leg spin bowler Mahendra Nagamootoo led his club Port Mourant to an innings and 74 runs victory over Skeldon Community Centre.

Resuming on their over week score of 260-5 in reply to Skeldon’s 159 Port Mourant made 324-7 declared with Rajendra Bolo making 48 and Yogindra Harrinarine 38 as they posted 84 runs for the sixth wicket. Off spinner Latchman Persaud took 4-96 and Sherwin Murray 2-83 bowling for Skeldon who were then shut out for 91 in their second innings after facing a deficit of 165.

Jermaine Reid with 51 was the lone batsman to offer resistance as Nagamootoo took 5-32. Scores: Skeldon 159 and 91, Port Mourant 324-7 declared.

Bermine and Rose Hall Community Centre played to a draw with the entire last day’s play being washed out.

Earlier Bermine, who lost first innings points, indicated to the umpires that they were playing the match under protest as Rose Hall fielded former Guyana under-15 player Keino Gravesande who had represented Blairmont in the Neal and Massy competition earlier this year.

Resuming on their over week 53-2 in reply to West Berbice 147, Bermine were bowled out for 144 with Riaz Kassim 33, Julian Moore 24 and Berbice’s under-19 batsman Eugene La Fleur 22 not out batting at number 10 owing to a hamstring injury sustained the previous day in a GCB Carib Beer/Pepsi sponsored 20/20 competition against the same opponents.

Bowling for West Berbice, former Berbice under-19 all rounder leg spinner Anil Solomon took 5-31 and pacers Keon Joseph and Colin Duke 2 for 28 and 2 for 50 respectively.

Batting a second time, West Berbice with a slim first innings lent of three runs reached 173-5 at the end of the second day. Solomon returned to hit 61 while Kenje Sedoc 31 and Krisendat Ramoo 27 lended support. Spinner Stephen Latcha took 2-58.

On Saturday, Albion Community Centre defeated Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar (RHYTWSB) by six wickets with a day to spare.

Enjoying a slim three- run lead, RHTWSB were bowled out for 103 in their second innings with Naresh Mahadeo top scoring with 20. Former Guyana off spinner Michael Chinsammy did the damage for Albion with 5-35 and 12-year-old national under-15 leg spinner Gudakesh Motie offered him tremendous support with 3-12.

Albion needing 107 for victory reached 109-4 with wicket keeper batsman Shastri Persaud leading the way with an unbeaten 60. Scores: RHTWSB 136 and 103 Albion 133 and 109-4
