Everest Hikers, GCC remain on course for finals spots

Guyana’s Everest Hikers men and Georgetown Cricket Club women are on course to secure places in the final after four sessions of the play in the Diamond Mineral Water Indoor Hockey Festival at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

The tournament ends today with the finals in the three divisions.

Hikers’ men have so far scored two wins and a draw and have recorded seven points; two behind current leaders Malvern, of Trinidad and Tobago, with nine points.

GCC men have six points from three matches Old Fort four from three while Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF) and Shakatan have so far failed to score from three matches played.

The Hikers who played to a thrilling 4-4 draw on the opening night, returned to crush Shakatan 17-0 and trounced TTDF 14-3 and in the process scored 35 goals so far in the competition.

Malvern who had beaten Shakatan 13-1 in their first match, returned to score a 4-2 win over GCC, and brushed aside TTDF 11-2.

GCC defeated Old Fort 5-4 and TTDF 7-4 in their two wins.

The ladies competition is also keenly contested with defending champions so far unbeaten in their two matches following victories against Malvern 6-3 and 2-1 against Everest Hikers.

The GCC women scored a come from behind 5-3 win over new-comers Harvard Maritime Checkers of the twin-island republic after they were trailing 2-3 at one stage.

The Bourda side also got the better of their local counterparts Hikers 5-2.

The Raiders are currently in the lead with six points from two matches, GCC also six points but from three matches, Malvern three points from three matches, Checkers three from two while Hikers have failed to get off the mark so far.

Old Fort are currently in the lead with four points in the men’s Veterans competition following a 6-5 win over Fatima of Trinidad and Tobago and a 4-4 draw against Carib Degenerates.

Fatima defeated Malvern 4-0 and Malvern beat Degenerates 5-2 in the other two matches played.

In yesterday morning’s results, the Raiders beat Hikers (women) 2-1 goal scorers Michelle Edwards and Valgene Hinckson for Raiders and Shameeza Mohamed for the Hikers. Fatima versus Malvern (veteran) 4-0 scoring for Fatima were Dean Nieves and Colin Young – two goals each.

Malvern versus GCC (women) 4-3 in favour of Malvern with Sherlan Cabralis scoring two goals, while Oire Trotman and Teresa Lezama one each. GCC scorers were Sonia Jardin (2) and Marzena Fiedtkou (1).

Old Old Fort and Degenerates 4-4. Ian Nicholson (2), Dexter Wyles and Gavin Hope one each for Old Fort, Degenerates scorers were Brian Asregado (2), Marcus Fiedtkou and Timothy Jonas one each.

In today’s action morning session, Shakatan will play TTDF, at 10 am, Everest will take on Malvern (women), Malvern will meet Old Old Fort (veterans), GCC will meet Hikers (men), Raiders will come up against Checkers (women) and Old Fort will tackle Malvern (men)

In the evening there will be a children’s exhibition match followed by the three finals starting at 5 pm.
