Berbice businesswoman reopens beauty academy

The Berbice Academy of Hairdressing and Beauty Culture aims to give women a chance to enhance their looks, Manager Raphael Lyte Munroe said at a brief opening ceremony hosted on Saturday at Rosignol.

Munroe, who was trained in England over 20 years ago, said the academy will be offering six-month theory and practical courses in cosmetology, hairdressing, manicure, pedicure and facials. Other services include straightening, steam treatment, treatment of damaged hair, braiding and hair extensions.

In the 1990s Munroe had been in the business of beauty in Berbice; at the Gene Amata Academy of Hairdressing and Beauty Culture, named after her daughter. She recalled that her love for “putting my long hair in fancy styles” is what prompted an aunt to send her to England to pursue courses in that field. Munroe said after those businesses closed their doors she decided to continue on the path of teaching and opened a private school where she offered secretarial and CXC subjects as well as lessons for common entrance students.
