The Trinidad and Tobago-based Southern Caribbean Chapter of the United States- based Project Management Institute will today launch its first regional committee in Georgetown and the Chapter’s Vice President responsible for marketing Owen Field has said that with the launch of the Guyana Committee, Guyana will become part of a global organization that is equipped to develop expertise in a discipline that is critical to the development of both the public and private sectors.
And according to Field the growth and development of project management professionalism in Guyana could benefit the country’s business community. “Business is essentially conducted on a project-driven basis,” Field said.
Another member of the PMI team here to participate in the launch of the local committee Rick Dow told Stabroek Business that in circumstances where the application of project management results in greater efficiency in a business entity other businesses will come under greater pressure to embrace the discipline.
The PMI is the leading membership association for project management professionals with more than 260,000 members in 171 countries.
Field said that creation of a PMI Committee in Guyana will help to popularize project management skills in a manner that will make professionals marketable both inside and outside Guyana. In addition to that it will enhance the efficiency of the organizations to which they are attached.
Guyana has already benefited from the training of seventeen project management professionals and Field said that the Southern Chapter was hopeful that Guyana may be able to establish its own Chapter in three years time. Field said that the launch of the Guyana Committee will trigger heightened activity designed the enhance local competence in the discipline including the provision of technical sessions for local professionals. “Our immediate objective is to grow a cadre of professionals in Guyana so that eventually Guyana can become a vibrant Chapter in its own right.
The Project Management Institute has 251 Chapters around the world which are responsible for serving as asdvocates for the profession, setting professional standards, providing access to project management-related information and promoting professional and career development among project management professionals.
Minister in the Ministry of Finance Jennifer Webster will deliver the feature address at today’s launch of the local Committee at the Le Meridian Pegasus.
