‘Flexibility’ for vendors, store owners ends

The Mayor and City Councillors (M&CC) is advising all street vendors that the period of flexibility that allowed them to sell along public thoroughfares has come to an end.

In a press release the Council said vendors who utilized the pavements along Regent Street and around the Stabroek Market Car Park must cease all activities at these locations and return now to their boundaries. Store owners who extended their businesses beyond their legal limits must also return to their borders.

The M&CC said the City Police Department has been helping vendors along Regent and Water streets to dismantle stalls and other makeshift structures.

The Council said it had relaxed certain City regulations for the festive season and now that it has come to an end it is hopeful that within a few days the city will return to a state of normalcy. Nevertheless, it said it has approved a motion to appoint a special committee to find a workable solution to the problem of street vending.
