Two remanded over separate knifepoint robberies

Two men yesterday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on separate robbery-under-arms charges and were remanded to prison by Magistrate Hazel Octive Hamilton.

First to be called was Mark Yaw, 48, of 28 Princes Street, Wortmanville, who has been accused of robbing a man at knifepoint of a quantity of raw gold and jewellery.

He was not required to plead to the charge when it was read to him. It is alleged that on Wednesday at Georgetown, while being armed with a knife, Yaw robbed Triston Gidding of four ounces of raw gold valued $700,000, one gold band valued $240,000, one silver chain valued $20,000 and one gold ring valued $25,000.

Yaw who was without an attorney told the court that the person making the allegation is lying on him.

Police prosecutor Shellon Daniels, however, asked for bail to be refused and requested a report date. The matter will continue on February 8.

Several minutes later 20-year-old Nazeem Persaud also called Nazeem Khan of Charlotte Street, Georgetown appeared before the magistrate also charged with knifepoint robbery. Persaud was not required to plead to the charge.

He is accused of using a knife to rob Bibi Mohammad of a gold cricket band valued $84,000, two Fridays ago.

Persaud will also make his next court appearance on February 8.
