The Public Works Ministry has earmarked a number of infrastructural works to improve the transportation and communication network.
A Government Informat-ion Agency (GINA) press release said the ministry, through the Work Services Group will rehabilitate roadways at Hague Backdam, West Coast Demerara, West Canje, Granville and Stanleytown Berbice.
The Best Old Road at Vreed-en-Hoop will also be upgraded, while repairs will be undertaken at the Soesdyke/Linden highway. Plans are in train to repair the Acrow Panel bridges at Moleson Creek, rehabilitate crucial sections of the Black Bush Polder (BBP) road and build a car park for the New Amsterdam Hospital. A feasibility study will be done and a design drafted for the BBP road.
Additionally, under the Urban Road Programme repairs will be done at intersections where traffic lights have been posted while more effort will be put into maintaining thoroughfares in the city. GINA said too repairs are expected to be done on the Bartica/Issano road and more focus will be placed on rehabilitating interior roads under a special unit the ministry has set up. Construction of a one-mile paved road at Mahdia is also planned.
According to the release the works will be undertaken with “local funds”, while there are other major projects that will be implemented with assistance from international organisations. These include feasibility studies for the new Demerara Harbour Bridge and the Linden-Lethem roadway.
Meanwhile, the reconstruction of about 20 culverts from Timehri to Rosignol is likely to start by July. A feasibility study will be done and the design prepared for 30 remaining structures along this route.
The release also said a new road safety programme will be developed for Grove, East Bank Demerara and traffic light intersections in the city.
