Man steals from woman to ‘sport’ with another – court hears

A 32-year-old man, who allegedly stole money and jewellery from his girlfriend and squandered it with another woman, was yesterday placed on $75,000 bail when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on a charge of simple larceny.

Albert Wilson of Lot 135 Lamaha Street, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

It was said that between January 10 and 11 Wilson stole a quantity of jewellery and cash, a total value of $395,000, the property of his girlfriend Pulmattie Balkarran.

In his defence, Wilson’s attorney said his client spent three nights in jail unaware of the crime he was alleged to have committed. The attorney made an application for bail on behalf of Wilson, which was subsequently granted.

Balkarran told the court that the accused lived with her periodically for five years. However, she said, it was because of his stealing that she would often ask him to leave the house. According to Balkarran, on January 10 she completed her business transactions and counted her money in the presence of Wilson. Wilson, she said, saw her put the money and jewellery in her wardrobe. The following day, January 11, Balkarran said, after the accused asked for $1,000 she told him he knew where the money was and to go and take it. Later that day, the woman went to get some money from the wardrobe and discovered it missing. Balkarran said she immediately called Wilson who told her he had the money and would bring it. Wilson failed to show up with the money, she said, and a second call was made in which she pleaded with him to return her money and jewellery.

The woman told the court that Wilson said he didn’t have the money and he put a woman on the line who claimed to be “sporting out” the money with Wilson and said she also had the jewellery which she wouldn’t return.

The matter was transferred to Court Two and will continue on February 11.
