Remanded for allegedly beating girlfriend over phone call

A Guyhoc Park man was on Wednesday remanded for allegedly unlawfully and maliciously wounding his reputed wife.

It is alleged that 29 year-old Joseph De Cunha of 126 Mazaruni Street, Guyhoc Park wounded Nerissa Fox on January 26 at the said address. He pleaded not guilty.

According to Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews, De Cunha and Fox were living together for about four months, when on January 26, Fox accidentally dialled the telephone number of the mother of De Cunha’s child.

He reportedly became annoyed at this, dragged her into the yard and began to beat her. She attempted to run into the house, but he allegedly slammed the front door in her face, put a cloth over her mouth and continuously punched her about the body.

She screamed for help and neighbours went to her assistance.

Fox took pictures of injuries she sustained all over her body and showed them to the magistrate. Her face was swollen and she could not speak loudly since the inside of her mouth was also swollen.

Reports were made at the La Penitence Police Station and the accused was arrested and charged. He will be back in court on February 1.
