From Enmore to BV/Triumph…

Under fierce pressure to do something about crime following the massacre of 11 persons, the government yesterday began a massive drive to clear backlands bush from Enmore to BV/Triumph and offer compensation to those affected but Buxton residents were already incensed about the damage they will sustain.

The condition of the backlands in several East Coast villages has triggered renewed concerns following the slaying of 11 people including five children at Lusignan two weeks ago. During a meeting with residents of Mon Repos one day after the shooting, President Bharrat Jagdeo was urged to take swift action to clear the backlands of Buxton and surrounding communities.

A large group of farmers, many of them women told Stabroek News yesterday afternoon that they were not opposed to the administration going after criminals who they believe were hiding out in the backlands, but they must do so cognizant of the fact that many residents depended on the farms for their livelihood. “What will we do to survive here
