Ministry signals flood alert

A flood watch alert was sounded yesterday for low-lying communities along the coast, particularly those in Regions Five and Six, following high levels of recorded rainfall during the past two days.

According to reports from the Hydrometeorological Office, this rainfall is expected to continue over the next several hours as a result of ongoing La Nina conditions, a Ministry of Agriculture media release stated.

It also quoted Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud as commenting that “Last night (Thursday) eight inches of rainfall was recorded in the upper reaches of the MMA, and from all indications this heavy rainfall will continue in the coming hours.”

In light of this, Persaud said, all regional bodies have been put on alert to ensure that all the staff and resources are mobilized to address the situation. And engineers have also been deployed to the flood-prone areas.

Persaud is to visit several areas over the weekend, including Region Three today and Region Five tomorrow, the release said.

He also noted that as a result of the current La Nina conditions, wet periods are expected over the next several days which may result in the accumulation of water and minor flooding in some areas, but he assured that all measures have been put in place to minimize flooding where possible.
