Digicel: Customer base over 200,000

Digicel says its first year of operation in Guyana has been phenomenal and that its customer base has grown to over 200,000.

Speaking to this newspaper yesterday on the eve of the company’s first anniversary, CEO Mark Linehan said that the company is notching up new customers every day. “We’re doing a lot of things right and now people are voting with their fingers,” Linehan said. The company was formally launched on February 14, 2008 with a large concert featuring hip-hop star Akon.

Additionally, he said that with the rapid expansion, the company is also expanding coverage in remote areas. “We’re continuing to invest on our investment and have opened offices in Mahdia, Kwakwani and Santa Rosa,” he said. Linehan said that the feedback from customers has been phenomenal, noting that they are pleased with the 24-hour customer care service. He said that the company had been the first to introduce prepaid and post-paid roaming, 24-hour customer care and other attractions, such as the Blackberry.

He said that the Blackberry, from Canadian company Research in Motion (RIM), has changed life for the businessperson, with its internet, email and data features. He said too that although stores sell Blackberry instruments, Digicel is the only source for the product with all the advanced features supported. He said Digicel is the only authorised dealer for RIM.
