Some ten injured in Charlestown accident

An accident at Broad and Russell streets, Charlestown saw approximately ten persons being taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital for treatment around 3.45 pm yesterday.

According to an eyewitness, the Route 41 minibus, BHH 1093, was heading south along Russell Street and the car, PKK 102, east along Broad Street. The bus was in the middle of the intersection when the car slammed into it resulting in the bus toppling over three times. According to the eyewitness, two persons were stuck in the mud and had to be pulled out when the bus finally stopped.

The bus was carrying four school children in the back seat, while the other seats had the required three passengers each.

At the hospital, several persons were awaiting treatment while those who were seriously injured were already taken into emergency room. Among those outside were Alisha Holder, Coley Jupiter and Andrea Murray all of Shirley Field Ridley Square, West Ruimveldt. Murray, who is heavily pregnant, sustained a hit to her head; her forehead was swollen. Two Dolphin Secondary School boys, Rondell Haynes, 12, and Akeem George, 12, said they were in the back seat of the bus. Both were at the hospital to receive treatment.

A sno-cone vendor Andrew Cossou sustained a split on his nose, a gash on his forehead and appeared to be suffering from shock as he stared blindly and did not respond to anything when asked.

Driver of the bus Ryan Barkley and his conductor were also taken to the hospital, but this newspaper could not determine whether the occupants of the car were also there.

Persons at the scene of the accident said there was dire need of traffic lights at that intersection since a lot of accidents occurred there.

Russell Street is a major thoroughfare for ‘Back Road’ and East Bank Demerara highway drivers.
