Four cops on bribery charge

Four members of the Guyana Police Force were yesterday taken before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for allegedly accepting $180,000 as a bribe to commit a corrupt act.

Shelwin Dowlin, 25, of Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara; Ganeshdat Deokaran, 31; Linsley Charles, 25, of 59 DB Eccles, East Bank Demerara and Olo Hicks, 28, of 22 Calendar Street, Albouystown were not required to plead to the charge when it was read to them by Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

It is alleged that on October 7, 2007 the four policemen corruptly accepted from Michael Richard the said sum of money for themselves as an inducement or reward to forbear prosecuting Singh who is an unlicensed firearm holder.

The men were placed on self-bail after their attorney explained to the court that they were each expected to report to duty as normal. The matter continues on March 14.
