Over 100 treated in Islam week medical outreach

Multipurpose technician, Ayesha Nicholson testing a patient’s blood pressure on Sunday during the medical outreachMore than 100 persons benefited from free medical check-ups and drugs at Bush Lot, West Berbice on Sunday when members of the Guyana Islamic Trust (GIT) organised a medical outreach in observance of Islam Awareness Week.

The outreach was conducted by Dr Alexander Sinclair of the Fort Wellington Hospital, assisted by Dr Ramgobin of the Mahaicony Health Centre, Pharmacist Feyaud Subhan and Multi-purpose Technician Ayesha Nicholson of the Fort Wellington Hospital and Shaneeza Saywack, a pharmacy assistant of the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Persons were treated for problems including the common cold, flu, pain, itching and diarrhoea at the clinic, which ran from 10 am to 2.30 pm while a few patients were referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for further treatment.

Drugs for the outreach were provided by the Guyana Islamic Relief Organisation, a branch of the GIT that is headed by Shazaad Khan.

The week of activities for Islam awareness, which is held once yearly, commenced on March 7 and ended on Sunday. It also included a seminar, cooking sessions, clothing and hamper distributions, visits to the sick, a free cinema show for children and evening lectures. A booth was also set up for a daily exhibition and sale of Islamic items.

Similar programmes were also held in other areas such as East Berbice, East Coast Demerara, West Demerara, Georgetown and Essequibo. The team for this year’s Islam Awareness Week was: ‘Honouring Human Dignity’.
