71-year-old remanded on two carnal knowledge charges

William GeorgeA 71-year-old pensioner was yesterday brought before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on two charges of carnally knowing a female under the age of fifteen.

William George of 9 Camp and D’Urban streets was not required to plead to the charges when they were read to him by Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

It is alleged that on March 13 last year and between February 1 and 29 George had carnal knowledge of a 13-year-old female.

Attorney-at-law Frank James said in George’s defence that his client was a well-respected elder member of the community who has had no trouble with the law during his long life. George, James said, is the owner of a drug store at the said address and lives with his 10-year-old son.

The prosecution objected to bail adding that George is almost six times the child’s age and the crime he has committed is not just legally but morally wrong as well.

George was remanded to prison and the matter was transferred to Court Six and will continue on April 2.
