No special rights bestowed on presidents’ spouses -PM

The Prime Minister was answering a question posed on February 1, by Alliance For Change Member of Parliament Sheila Holder.

The question she had asked was what rights, privileges and entitlements do first ladies and former first ladies enjoy by practice or convention. The matter recently came up in relation to First Lady Varshnie Jagdeo.

With regard to a former first lady whose spouse served as executive president, Hinds said she would not be entitled to anything but what was provided by the court “secondary to claims arising from the implied separation and/or divorce”.

A widowed former first lady, he said, would be entitled to survivor’s benefits based on her deceased spouse’s pension.

He also said that a former first lady was a private citizen
