Woman remanded over Immigration Dept stamps

A 27-year-old woman was remanded on Wednesday after being charged with intent to defraud when she appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Jashree Singh of 114 Junior Staff Compound, Diamond, East Bank Demerara allegedly had in her possession three Central Immigration Department seals and passport office entry and exit stamps.

Police prosecutor Desiree Griffith said that the police acting on information carried out a search at the woman’s house where the incriminating items were reportedly found. She expressed amazement that such items were found at the woman’s house and objected to bail on the grounds that the accused is a flight risk since it is possible she might flee to neighbouring Suriname where her husband is now working.

Singh’s lawyer told the court that the woman has nothing to do with the find and that the investigations will prove this.

The magistrate remanded Singh and she has to return to Court Six today.
