Colwyn King appears for assault charge

Colwyn KingPresident of the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) Colwyn King yesterday attended court for his assault and unlawful wounding cases after Magistrate Gordon Gilhuys on Thursday threatened to issue an arrest warrant for him if he didn’t appear.
Thursday was the second time in a row that King had been absent from the proceedings and Magistrate Gilhuys was annoyed when attorney-at-law Jaya Manickchand told him that King was in the North West and could not make it to court. Magistrate Gilhuys then threatened to issue an arrest warrant if King didn’t appear in court yesterday.
Yesterday King himself gave the same explanation to Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle who dealt with the case in Magistrate Gilhuys’ absence. King said that he was in the North West region and Bartica but could not return to Georgetown for the proceedings even though he tried desperately to do so.
It is alleged that on September 30 last at Charlotte Street, King assaulted Onica Timmerman. He made his first court appearance on October 5 before Gilhuys who released him on $25,000 bail after he denied the allegations.
The matter will continue on May 15 and King has been warned to attend court.
