Civic group mapping landfills, wells in regions three, four

The Guyana Citizens’ Initiative (GCI) last week presented an update on its work mapping landfill and well sites to generate a sanitation index for regions three and four.

According to a press release the team, led by Daudi Husbands sought to establish the said sites in relation to population density in the regions under study. “This will be followed by ground-truthing exercises in the communities as part of GCI’s efforts to provide information and raise awareness on sanitation and health related issues,” the release said.
The group aims to produce a GIS analysis to determine a sanitation index which follows the work done at the time of the 2005 flood.

During the flood it produced several maps and reports to assist partner NGOs, international organisations and community groups active in relief and infrastructural activities. GCI board member Jocelyn Dow gave a brief presentation on the group’s work during the flood.

Meanwhile, the Rights of the Child (ROC) launched its documentary Hope for Mahaica. It was first launched in March in the UK. It was introduced by Nicollette Boatswain and Shirvanie Persaud who also reported on their recent tour of the UK where they presented the video to schools and at the LiveSimply Conference on the Environment. ROC was awarded a certificate for its awareness work on the environment at the conference.

GCI said community activists from the East Coast and Mocha/Arcadia, representatives from NGOs, the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development, the Civil Defence Commission, Oxfam, USAID, the Guyana Red Cross Society, GHRA, ROC and the health ministry also attended the meeting.
