Sussex Street man remanded on three carnal knowledge charges

A 33-year-old man was remanded to prison yesterday when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on three charges of carnal knowledge and one charge of indecent assault.

Benedict WilliamsBenedict Williams of 33 Sussex Street, Charlestown was not required to plead to the indictable charges when Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle read them to him. It is alleged that from October 1 last year to May 3, Williams indecently assaulted a female under the age of 15. Further, it is alleged that from January 1 to January 31 and March 1 to March 31 Williams had unlawful carnal knowledge of three females under the age of 15. Attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson argued on Williams’s behalf that because of the nature of his client’s work he was not even in Georgetown on the dates it is alleged he had carnal knowledge of the girls. He further made an application for bail to be granted, stating that his client was not a flight risk and he posed no threat to the witnesses.

However, the prosecution requested that bail be refused based on the evidence given by the three females in their statements to the police. Further, the prosecution said, if bail were granted the accused would not return. Bail was subsequently refused and the matter will continue on May 28 in Court Six.
