Robbery convict asks for 12 months and gets it

A 36-year-old man who robbed another of his wallet containing $40,000 in cash received a 12-month sentence when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Michael Gainer of 293 Lusignan West, East Coast Demerara pleaded guilty to the charge of robbery with violence when it was read to him by Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.
On the night of May 8 at Robb and Cummings streets Gainer robbed Brantley February of his wallet containing $40,000 and immediately before or after he  used personal violence on his victim. According to reports, on the night in question at a restaurant on Robb and Cummings streets the defendant approached February, cuffed him in the right eye and relieved him of the said articles. Gainer told the court that he didn’t take any money from the man.

He said that he was at the restaurant buying cigarettes. However, he refused to have the magistrate enter a not guilty plea for him.

“I does jus’ burn lil ganja,” Gainer told the court when asked whether he smoked. He further said that he would like to serve a twelve-month sentence for the crime.

The defendant was sentenced to prison for twelve months.  “You asked for a year and you’ve gotten a year,” the magistrate told Gainer.
