Bent St man broke another’s jaw

A 32-year-old man was remanded yesterday after he appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle on a charge of inflicting bodily harm. Gavin Denny of 38 Bent Street, Werk-en-Rust allegedly broke the jaw of Winston Dowers on the night of December 2, 2007.

The virtual complainant told the court that Denny had disembarked from a vehicle in front of his home and asked to speak to his (Dowers’) then girlfriend. He said that he was waiting on the young woman when Denny walked up, grabbed him and cuffed him in the jaw. Dowers said that he attempted to run but he tripped and fell and then Denny kicked him about the body.
The magistrate asked why Dowers was only now being charged and the investigating officer told the court that he had evaded the police and was also wanted for another matter involving a bicycle. At this point the accused in a raised voice said that he was never wanted for any other matter. The magistrate told him that he needed to control his behaviour in court.

She then remanded him until June 2 and transferred the matter to Court Two. The man left the court room grumbling.
