Shot taxi driver refused bail on flight charge

The 34-year-old taxi-driver, who was shot by the police following a chase last Monday night, was refused bail when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of escaping from lawful custody.

Oswald Rambarran of 559 West Ruimveldt pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

It is alleged that on June 3 while being in lawful custody, pending investigations on an assault charge, Rambarran escaped.

Attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson told the court that on the said day his client was under the influence of a large amount of medical drugs. According to the lawyer, Rambarran became delirious and just walked out of the hospital.

Thompson made an application for bail saying that his client, who sustained a gunshot wound under his left armpit, was seriously injured.

In reply to Thompson’s statements the prosecution said that Rambarran being delirious is no defence in the case.

The prosecution  requested that bail be refused based on the serious nature of Rambarran’s actions which resulted  in him being wounded.

Rambarran was remanded to prison and the matter will continue on June 13.

According to a previous police press release at about 10 pm last Monday ranks of a police mobile patrol observed Rambarran and a male accomplice trying to force a man into the trunk of a motorcar.

As the police approached, the accomplice fled and Rambarran sped away in his car.

A chase ensued and Rambarran was shot as a result. He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) and was under guard, the release had said.

The man subsequently escaped and the police rank who was supposed to be guarding him was placed under close arrest, reports stated.
