A mid-morning brawl at Levi’s Dam, Angoy’s Avenue in New Amsterdam on Wednesday ended tragically when a 28-year-old man was fatally stabbed about his body with a spear.

Police were yesterday hunting for the attacker and two other suspects who are still on the run.

Anthony Ramdhan SamarooAnthony Ramdhan Samaroo called `Tanna’ of Ogleton Dam was picked up in an unconscious condition and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds around 10 pm the same night.
A brother, Alvin Samaroo said that his brother suffered 12 stabs to his back, chest and stomach. He said doctors were in the process of performing surgery on his brother when he died without regaining consciousness.

His mother Meena Samaroo said he went into the theatre around 1 pm. The woman said that x-rays showed that he suffered internal bleeding and that both of his lungs were damaged.

She told Stabroek News that the murder stemmed from a problem her son and the attacker(s) had a few weeks ago.

According to her the attacker and his relatives who were accused of stealing a generator from a resident and selling it, had claimed that her son had given information to the police.

She learnt that while he was being attacked persons were shouting, “kill him because he is police cochore (informer).”

But persons related that the fracas started after the attacker accused the victim’s 16-year-old brother of stealing from him and proceeded to beat him up. He then went home and woke up Samaroo and informed him what had transpired.

This newspaper learnt that Samaroo who worked part-time as a mason left in a haste to go to the attacker’s home “to find out what happened.” Reports are that he had armed himself with a cutlass which he hid behind his back while in the company of a few other relatives.

According to reports the assailant advanced with his spear and pierced Samaroo in his chest and stomach. An eyewitness said that “Tanna back-to-back and he fall and then [name] tek the spear and juk he in he back.”

He got up immediately and attempted to escape further attacks but the eyewitness recounted that the attacker’s brother took the cutlass “and broadside him.”

He said too that the brother “swing the cutlass and try fuh chop off he neck but a woman start fuh scream and then he stop…” His relatives who were with him became scared and ran away while the attacker fled the scene shortly after the incident.

The dead man’s mother who works at a restaurant said she was preparing to leave home when she received the news of the incident. When she got to the scene her son was lying on the dam bleeding.

She said someone had already called a taxi and she accompanied him to the hospital. A post-mortem is expected to be performed tomorrow.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a resident of Edinburgh, East Bank Berbice was chopped about his head after a drinking spree with his friends.

Reports are that the men had gone to the karaoke in New Amsterdam and around midnight the men became drunk and an argument ensued. The victim reportedly started to physically abuse one of his acquaintances and they then left him at the bar and returned home.

This newspaper understands that around 1 am he broke the gate to one of the men’s home and started to kick down the door and threatened to kill them.

At this stage another drinking partner heard what was happening and rushed over with a cutlass and dealt him a few chops on his forehead. He was rushed to the NA Hospital where he received treatment.
