The remains of 54-year-old Sohanlall `Ramesh’ Somai, a fisherman/technician of Number 69 Village, were identified by his younger brother, Mohan, around 8 am yesterday. A suspect was reportedly taken into custody.

Two children who were passing in the area made the discovery of Somai’s nude and decomposing body in a pasture around 1:30 pm on Tuesday.

They raised an alarm and the police were informed and they visited the scene along with the Berbice Pathologist, Dr. Vivikanand Brijmohan.

Somai’s clothing which included a pair of long blue jeans, a long sleeved white shirt and a belt which was off the pants, was scattered nearby. Blue and white sneakers and green underwear were also found.

He appeared to have been there for about two days leading investigators to believe that he must have been “sporting” at a wedding house nearby.

Mohan told Stabroek News that he was away at sea at the time of the discovery. He said he returned home late Wednesday night.

The following morning he learnt from neighbours that a body was found and that it appeared to be his brother.

He said he visited the Skeldon Hospital first and after persons there confirmed that the body indeed looked like his brother he went to the Springlands Police Station. Police officers accompanied him to the hospital’s mortuary where the body was identified.

He said he had been living in the same house with his brother but he [Somai] moved out to stay with the persons he was working with at sea.

He learnt that his brother had attended a wedding on Sunday and had accompanied a man, whom he stayed with, home around 6 pm. The man who reportedly suffers from poor vision told investigators that after Somai took him home he left to go out again and he could not say what became of him.

However, Mohan is puzzled that even though his brother’s body was found about 100 yards away from where he stayed, no one recognized him.

He said his brother also repaired appliances such as televisions and radios and was “quiet and friendly and never he had problems with anybody; he was not a troublesome chap… only he like drink he lil rum.”

Somai who separated from his wife several years ago leaves to mourn his siblings, three children and five grandchildren.
