Tripped feeder downs Demerara power system

GPL says the Sophia F5 Feeder tripped as a result of a damaged high voltage cable which caused the entire Demerara Interconnected System to shut down on Tuesday night at 7.58.

In a press release the company said its technicians worked tirelessly to ensure power was restored starting with the Timehri circuit including areas from Garden of Eden and sections of the Soesdyke/Linden Highway at about 8.03 pm; and Kitty, Lamaha Gardens and parts of Campbellville along with the Georgetown hospital and the Main Street feeder about 8.15 pm.

The company said some areas in the city had been left without power until 10.53 am yesterday because an alternative power supply could only be sourced from an external switch which was found to be defective.

GPL said it appreciates customers’ patience and tolerance particularly those who were left without power for over 12 hours. The company also commends its team of engineers and technicians for their response in the circumstances.
