EPA urges public to keep the city clean

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is advising the public to ensure that refuse is disposed of in a lawful manner.

The EPA said persons can discard household waste in litter bins and bulky waste such as construction waste, old furniture and vehicles must be deposited at the sites designated for this purpose by the authorities. It said it also considers the improper storage of scrap metal as littering and anyone found guilty will be prosecuted in a court of law. The EPA is also reminding the public that littering is an offence under the EPA Act 1996; Part VII (1) (a) and Part VII 34 (1) (b) and persons found guilty are liable to penalties of between $10,000 and $50,000 and $30,000 and $80,000 respectively.

According to the Government Information Agency (GINA) the EPA is intensifying its anti-littering programme starting with areas along the East Coast and East Bank. GINA said too Guyana has much to gain from hosting Carifesta X and persons should ensure that Georgetown is indeed a “Garden City” during and after the festival.
