Four-megawatt hike in power demand recorded

Guyana Power and  Light  is again appealing to customers to continue energy conservation efforts even as  power demand rose by at least four megawatts over the past week   with all the preparations  going into the hosting of Carifesta X.

“GPL would like to remind all its customers that even though celebrations are in the air as Guyana plays proud host to this premier Caribbean Festival of Arts, we are still fighting fuel prices internationally and therefore our collective energy conservation effort must continue,” the power company said in a release yesterday.

And underscoring the need to practice  energy conservation, GPL said that in dressing up  buildings for Carifesta X  persons should  ensure that they use  energy saving bulbs instead of  incandescent bulbs, pointing out that the energy saving bulb uses only 20% of the power of the incandescent bulb for the same brightness.

GPL also noted that  its  peak period  is between 6 pm and 9 pm daily, adding that the power demand for Carifesta has increased as expected  but the forecast peak was reached even before the opening as numerous events are being hosted across many regions.
