Man denies attempting to rob another of items valued over $70,000

Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Friday refused bail to a 33-year-old man who allegedly attempted to rob another of just over $70,000 worth of items.

Nigel McCalman of 24 Hadfield Street, Lodge pleaded not guilty to the charge of attempting to commit a felony when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that on July 30 in Georgetown the accused attempted to rob Brinsley Adonis of one watch, one cellular phone and a quantity of cash, together valued at $70,300.

McCalman told the court that he “didn’t go to rob” the man. He explained that he had a problem with a policeman who would normally give him drugs (narcotics) to sell. “I didn’t even know he was a police,” the man said. The accused explained that after the problem surfaced between them the policeman “set people to chop him up.”

The magistrate remanded McCalman and the matter is to continue on September 19.
