Chinese restaurateur remanded over fraud

Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday remanded a Chinese restaurateur to prison over two counts of intent to defraud and one count of illegally entering Guyana without presenting himself to the immigration officer.

It is alleged that Lei Dahai, 32, of Lot 148 Robb Street Georgetown, on August 24, at Port Moleson Creek, Corentyne issued to Constable 18620 Gonarine one forged Republic of Guyana visa in one Republic of China passport GO7655412 showing that it was issued by the Central Immigration Georgetown, knowing it to be false. Also that between November 1 and November 13, 2006 in Georgetown the accused allegedly conspired to commit a forgery by the false representation of a Republic of Guyana visa in a Republic of China passport GO7655412 knowing same to be false.

It is also alleged that on August 24 at Springlands, Corentyne the accused entered Guyana illegally without presenting himself to an immigration officer.

Appearing on the behalf of the accused, attorney-at-law Rexford Jackson in his application for bail, said that his client owns and operates a restaurant at his place of abode and has a month-old baby who was born in Guyana.
The Magistrate will rule on the bail application today.
