Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle on Tuesday remanded to prison an employee of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri who allegedly had in his possession a quantity of cannabis.
Ellerton Eston Lyte, 27, pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of 11.3kg of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
It is alleged that on September 13 at the airport, Lyte who was driving a tractor containing luggage was stopped at a checkpoint, and a search that was conducted on the luggage uncovered the quantity of cannabis stuffed in a suitcase
However, Lyte’s attorney stated that his client only drives that tractor to transport the luggage around the airport and anyone could have placed the narcotics in the suitcase. The attorney went on to say that Lyte was not aware of any narcotics on the tractor. The defence attorney then applied for bail.
Magistrate Robertson-Ogle ordered that Lyte be remanded to prison and that he returns to Court Five on October 7.
