A junk yard worker who had in his possession a live round of ammunition was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment when he appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle on Wednes-day at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Sherwin Pinder, 33,  pleaded guilty to having in his possession one live round of .22 ammunition.

On Sunday at around 11.40 pm behind the Guyana Fire Station, Stabroek, police were conducting an exercise when Pinder was stopped and searched and the ammunition was found in his right side pants pocket.

Pinder was arrested and taken to the Brickdam Police Station where he was told of the offence.
However Pinder stated that he was weeding the grass on a parapet in front a Regent Street store when “I see something like copper or brass that I does sell.” He said  that he picked it up (the ammo) but he did not know at the time that it was ammunition. Pinder added “I neva had no military experience, I only know it look like a pendant.”

He said that if he had known it was this serious “I woulda throw it away cause I ain’t stupidy.” He said that three days after he had picked up the ammunition, he was stopped by a policeman who found it and arrested him. Pinder was later escorted out of the court shouting, “I innocent.”
