‘They beat me bad, bad’

– break and enter accused tells court

A 38-year-old man who allegedly broke and entered the dwelling house of another man told the court yesterday that the persons who made a citizen’s arrest had beaten him up.

Leon Brown of 613 East Ruimveldt pleaded not guilty to the charge of breaking and entering the dwelling house of Robert Carryl and was remanded to prison when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on September 23, Brown broke and entered Carryl’s home at Lot 174 D’Urban Backlands with the intention of stealing.

But he was apprehended by public-spirited persons who dealt him several blows about his body, resulting in him being admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital to receive medical treatment.

“They beat me bad, bad and the prison officers ain’t giving me the medication the hospital give me.”

He pleaded with the magistrate, “Ow please tell dem foh gimme the medication cause the licks got me feeling real sick.”

The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that they did not know the true address of Brown since he had given them varying locations.

Magistrate Robertson then ordered that Brown be remanded to prison and his medication be given to him. He has to return to Court Two on October 6.
