A woman whose stall allegedly had a quantity of cannabis twice in one day was remanded to prison yesterday when she appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Theresa Jordan pleaded not guilty to two counts of unlawful possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking when the charges were read to her.
It is alleged that on October 30 at Stabroek Market, Jordan was found with 31 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. It is also alleged that later that day Jordan was found with 240 grammes more of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
However Jordan’s lawyer Vic Puran stated that the cannabis was found on a shelf in a stall where Jordan operates as a vendor but she does not own the stall. He said the stall owner was also arrested, but subsequently released.
“There is no prospect of a conviction in this matter,” said Puran. He also stated that Jordan was never seen with the narcotics nor was she seen throwing it away or were any traces of it found on her person. Puran said that should be a special circumstance, in which his client should be granted bail.
However, Prosecutor Desiree Fowler objected to the bail application on the grounds that the offence was only bailable under special circumstances and the defence did not present one. She said the police did a sting operation after they were informed that Jordan allegedly sold drugs.
The magistrate subsequently ordered that Jordan be remanded to prison and that she appear again in court on February 25 next year.
