Accused of stealing pot, gas bottles

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on Tuesday remanded a Sophia man accused of assault, break and enter and larceny when he appeared at court.

Twenty-four-year-old Dwayne Burrowes of Lot 449 C Field pleaded not guilty to the charges at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on November 2, Burrowes broke and entered the dwelling of Wynette Amsterdam and stole an aluminum pot and two gas bottles valued $20, 500. It is also alleged that on the same day at Duncan Street, Campbellville, Burrowes unlawfully assaulted Amsterdam’s son.

Amsterdam told the court that he “was losing lots of things in mey home.”  He said he told his son to stay out of the house on the said day so that they could ambush the thief. The man said his son was nearby his home and saw Burrowes jumping over the fence with the items in his possession. Amsterdam said his son and his friends chased Burrowes who dropped the items and continued to escape. The group soon caught him, gave him a sound beating then handed over to the police.

However, Burrowes refuted Amsterdam’s statements. He told the court “two men, one with a big wood and one with a cutlass come in me guard hut and start foh beat me.” Burrowes said he had never left his hut that is located near to the Amsterdam home.

The man said too eyewitnesses can attest to the fact that he had been in the hut at the time of the incident since they had pleaded “Ow lef he alone he went in de hut all night” as he was being beaten.
Burrowes  was ordered to return to court on November 25.
