In remembering the men and women who died in World Wars One and Two, Guyanese also recall others who have made sacrifices to the cause of freedom throughout the years, President Bharrat Jagdeo said at the Remembrance Day wreath laying ceremony at the cenotaph yesterday.
The traditional ceremony held in remembrance of the many soldiers who lost their lives in the first and second world wars commenced at 8 am yesterday and saw the laying of wreaths by the Head of State, Ministers of Government and members of the Diplomatic Corps. Diplomats included representatives of the United Nations and CARICOM and ambassadors of the various countries.
City Mayor Hamilton Green and the Scouts Association also took part in the wreath laying event, which saw prayers from the three major religious groups.
The president, according to the Government Information Agency, noted that the world is forever indebted to the valiant men and women who gave their lives in the wars.
The ceremony ended with a march past and salute to the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces.
