A 13-year-old boy who stole a gold chain from a female relative will spend the next two years at the New Opportunity Corps (NOC) on the Essequibo Coast, Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin ordered yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
The teen had pleaded guilty to the charge of larceny from a dwelling house when it was read to him.
The prosecution stated that on November 7 around 23:30 hours, Sadicka Bharrat placed her gold chain valued $12,000 on top of her wardrobe and went to bed. The following morning when she checked for it, it was missing. Bharrat said she questioned the teen about the chain and he ran away.
A report was made to the police station and the teen was later apprehended.
The teen later admitted that he stole and sold the chain. The prosecution stated that the teen had appeared before the court on a similar charge previously and was placed on a bond to keep the peace for two years. The prosecution asked the court to consider that the teen had broken that bond.
The teen’s mother stated, “I can’t keep he no more cause all he do is fetch away de things in de house and go and sell them.” The mother also stated that the teen was before the court some time in August for stealing money from her. The mother also informed the court that the teen had refused to go to school.
When asked by the magistrate how much he sold the chain for, the teen stated, “fuh $2,000 so I coulda buy something fuh eat.”
The magistrate subsequently ordered that the teen spend the next 24 months in the NOC, a correctional institution at Suddie, Essequibo Coast.
