Two injured in cell phone prison ruckus

A fight over a cellular phone, which involved the use of ice picks, has landed two inmates of the Camp Street penitentiary in hospital; one is in a serious condition.

Derrick Norton and Randy Joseph sustained puncture wounds in the chest area and after being rushed to the Georgetown Hospital by prisoner officers, were admitted.

Norton was treated and later admitted to the open ward under guard while Joseph was taken to the theatre for emergency surgery to stop his internal bleeding.

Reports reaching Stabroek News are that the two arrived around 8:15 am and while they were both conscious, wounds to the chest were visible.

Sources told this newspaper that it was a cellular phone that sparked the incident.

When this newspaper arrived at the hospital, Joseph was still in the emergency room being tended to by the medical staff.
