Landlady accused of robbery with violence, other crimes

A landlady who allegedly broke and entered her tenant’s home and robbed her of a gold chain among other items was granted bail yesterday when she appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magis-trate’s Court.

Thirty-seven-year old Simone Lewis, a mother of three, of Pike Street, Kitty was not required to plead to three indictable charges of robbery with violence, damage to property and break and enter but she pleaded not guilty to the charge of unlawful assault.

It is alleged that on November 27, at Pike Street, Kitty, Lewis, together with others, robbed Kim Ifill of a gold chain valued $40,000, and used violence to commit the act.

It is also alleged that on November 27, at Pike Street, Lewis damaged a chair set, a wall divider, a freezer, a microwave and several other items, totalling $354,500, property of Ifill.

It is also alleged that on November 27, at Pike Street, Lewis broke and entered the home of Ifill and stole two gas bottles valued $10,000.

It is alleged too that on November 27, at Pike Street, Lewis unlawfully and maliciously assaulted Leon Archer.

“I don’t see how somebody who owns a property can go and break up her own windows that she got to put back,” stated attorney-at law Mortimer Coddette.

He informed the court that Ifill resides in Lewis’s property as a tenant and measures had been put in place to get her to move out. “The court should note that all the charges were allegedly made by a single person.” Codette went on to say that this is the second week in one month that Lewis had been incarcerated and the reason that she did not attend court on her last court date was because she was not properly informed by the police. He said that he would ensure that does not happen again. He also noted that Lewis was breastfeeding her last child. He applied for bail for Lewis stating that if she is granted bail she will appear back in court when required to.

The magistrate subsequently granted Lewis bail in the sum of $240,000 and ordered that she appear again in court on January 13.
