New Year’s in jail for larceny accused

A 33-year-old man, who allegedly broke and entered the home of another man stealing clothing and a ladder together worth almost $400,000, was remanded to prison until the New Year.

Phillip Denny, 33, pleaded not guilty to the charge of burglary when it was read to him by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

It is alleged that on December 19 at Georgetown, Denny broke and entered the home of Shawn Witherspoon and stole one aluminum ladder worth $100,000 and a quantity of clothing valued $280,000.

Denny told the court that is was a case of mistaken identity. However, Police Prosecutor Sherwin Mathew explained that this was not possible since the accused was caught in the virtual complainant’s house.

Mathew’s objection to bail which was based on the seriousness and prevalence of the crime was granted.

The accused appears in court on January 7.
