Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle yesterday remanded a 22-year-old man to prison after he was accused of breaking into a business woman’s storage bond and carting off more than $600,000 worth of articles, including electronic items.
Gregory Stewart of 2977 North Ruimveldt was not required to plead to an indictable charge of break and enter and larceny when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
It is alleged that on December 13 last at 2885 North Ruimveldt, Stewart along with others broke into a storage bond belonging to Learia Bristol and stole a quantity of electronic items, a pressure cooker and a water pump, together valued $629,000.
Reports reaching Stabroek News are that Bristol is the owner of a variety and electronics store on Robb Street. On December 12 she secured her bond and went to her store. The following day she went back to the bond and took out some goods before once again securing the building. She subsequently returned and on checking discovered some articles missing. She received information that three persons, including the defendant, had broken into the building and removed the articles.
Police prosecutor Denise Griffith asked for bail to be refused since she believed that the defendant would not return for trial. She informed the court that none of the articles mentioned in the charge was recovered.
The matter continues on January 29.
