Caricom immigration, customs chiefs meet

The Fourth Joint Meeting of the Caricom Standing Committee of Immigration and Customs deliberated further on the current border security initiatives to determine the next steps in the programme for regional immigration and customs for 2008-2009.

According to a press release the meeting was co-chaired by Chair of the Customs Standing Committee Fitzroy John, Comptroller of Customs, Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) and Grenada Head of Immigration Jessmon Prince. St Lucia Head of Immigration Moses James delivered the opening remarks at the session. It was held on Tuesday and Wednesday last.

The meeting acknowledged that “consistent and continued attendance by Heads of Immigration and Customs within all CARICOM countries would be key to the development and successful delivery of regional programmes and regional border security initiatives,” the release said.

The release said immigration and customs chiefs from member states including Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Grenada, Guyana, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, T&T attended the session. Representatives from the Associate States Anguilla, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands and the Turks and Caicos Islands also attended.

Other delegates included directors and senior officers from the Caricom Secretariat, the Caricom Implementation Agency for Crime and Security, the Joint Regional Communications Centre and the Regional Intelligence Fusion Centre.

The meeting was hosted at the Rex Resort at Gros Islet, St Lucia.
