Man dies after motor bike crashes into truck

A motorcycle pillion rider was killed on the Columbia, Mahaica public road yesterday afternoon after the bike collided with a truck which was heading in the opposite direction.

Dead is Lloyd Syfox, of Foulis, East Coast Demerara. The other person who was on the motorcycle, Dorrain Holder is a patient of the Georgetown Public Hospital reportedly suffering from a broken right leg and several bruises and cuts about his body.

Reports indicated that at about 3 pm yesterday the two men along with a group of other CBR riders were on their way to Berbice to participate in Mashramani celebrations when the accident occurred. Eyewitnesses say the cycle got hooked on the right side of the truck and Syfox was flung on the road.

Owner of the truck, Khemraj Karu of B. Karu & Sons of Cane Grove, Mahaica told Stabroek News last evening that his sons Deopaul and Bishampaul were returning home after tending to their rice fields when the accident occurred.

He said his sons told him that they saw three motorcycles coming around the turn at Columbia at top speed. The next thing they knew was that one of the bikes smashed into their truck.

When this newspaper reached the scene a large crowd had gathered and blood was spattered on the road and parts of the motorcycle were strewn all over.

At Syfox’s home last evening, his relatives and friends gathered and mourned his death. His wife, Norma Syfox said that she did not have all the details as to how her husband of eight years met his death. She recalled that the last time she saw him was at about 2:30 pm yesterday when he left the home to go to Berbice. She said that the motorcycle did not belong to him and he was the pillion rider.
