“Me ain’t thief, me tek it,” says man jailed for stealing from mom

A 28-year-old man was sentenced to two years imprisonment after he admitted stealing from his mother when he appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Ramesh Mansingh of Independence Street, La Grange, West Bank Demerara pleaded guilty to a charge of larceny from the dwelling house and was sentenced by Magistrate Fazil Azeez.

According to the facts on the case, on March 10 at La Grange, Mansingh stole from his mother, Chanmattie Durga’s house, two transformers, a Sankey DVD player, six plates, three bed sheets, a gold ring and a pot set, all valued at $170,000, the property of Durga.

In explaining his actions, the repeat offender told the court that he lives in the same house and “me ain’t thief, me tek it.”

He said that he had pawned some of the items for $5,000. He declared that he was “going to the bush now.”

After being reminded that he had committed similar offences before, the magistrate handed down the sentence.
